While an autopsy has yet to be performed, the actions that caused the accident are relatively clear: “muddin’.”
On the new hit MTV show, Shain and his friends frequently went “muddin’,” aka off-roading in the West Virginia backwoods. In one particular clip, he and friend Shae discussed their pal Katie’s fear of the dangerous pastime, revealing that she cried and ran away after they went 60 mph on a small four-wheel path. Sadly, it was that path (or a similar one) that Shain, his uncle, and their family friend were found dead next to earlier today.
BuzzFeed unveiled some additional details about his death via Corporal Brian Humphreys. "The vehicle and bodies were found by one of Shain Gandee's friends who was searching the trails and ridges in the area for him and the others," the corporal explained. "The vehicle [red Bronco] sat unevenly, but upright, and was partially submerged in deep mud. Mud was covering the lower part of the passenger side door of the vehicle, but the driver's side of the vehicle was above the mud. The muffler of the vehicle was completely below the surface of the mud."
Like we saw on Buckwild, these trails are meant to be used by four-wheelers, not big trucks.
"The Bronco was found next to a ridge-top trail. That section of the trail itself was passable for four-wheel drive vehicles. However, the Bronco was in a mud pit next to the trail,” Corporal Humphreys continued, adding that Shain was driving and that the truck was later removed from the mud pit with a help of a bulldozer.
From the sounds of it, there was no way for any of them to escape once they were submerged in the mud pit, and considering there was no cell reception out there, they couldn’t have called for help And even if they did have reception? Shain refused to use a cell phone.
“I don’t have a phone, no,” he said in a video interview. “When I turned 16 and I got my truck stuck in a mud hole, and I went to use it and I didn’t have service, I said, ‘Well, this ain’t gonna be no good here!’ and I threw it in the mud hole with my truck and started walking, and that was it.”
