8-Year-Old Sent Home From School 24 Times For Her ‘Foul Odor’
Krystal Hensley admits that her 8-year-olddaughter is smelly, but after several visits to the doctor’s office, no medical condition has been recognized as the source of the unpleasant odor. Despite Krystal’s attempts to remedy to the issue, her daughter’s Washington County school in Tennessee has sent the girl home 24 times due to the distraction and that she will continue to be suspended from school if “corrective measures” are not taken.
The Fox News report is unclear as to what the smell is, and it also does not specify whether the family claims to practice necessary hygiene.
Ron Dykes, the director of schools in the Washington County School District, commented indirectly that a child will be sent home when they abuse proper hygiene and become a distraction.
"In those cases,” Dykes told Fox News, “they are very extreme and to be quite frank the odor is so overpowering and extremely offensive to other children and adults so some sort of home bound program is used or the child will be removed temporarily from the school until the family complies.”
We feel horribly for this girl who must be in a state of social panic. We can remember being singled out in school for wearing glasses or ratty shoes every day, but to be ridiculed by not only your peers but your teachers and even the adults in the district office about how you smell so horribly that it’s a distraction — we can’t even imagine.
On the other hand, we do understand that the other children deserve a non-distracting environment in which to learn and study, and if your sense of smell is so impaired as it seems this child’s odor is causing in her classroom, concentration is impossible.
