Evil Dead Is #1 Movie at U.S. Box Office

They may be dead, but they’re alive and well at the box office. We love our zombies!

Evil Dead, the R-rated remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult classic has been sweeping the box office by storm since it opened on Friday. The gory flick has racked in an estimated $26 million, beating out last week’s G.I. Joe Retaliation, which scored $21.1 million, and The Croods which landed $20.9 million in its third week in theaters.

The movie, starring Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez, even beat out the hotly anticipated re-release of Jurassic Park in 3-D, crushing previous speculation that a remake of the indie classic (which grossed less than $3 million when it hit theaters some 30 years ago) would be a flop.

The film is bringing in original Evil Dead fans as well as droves of people who have never seen the original, which garnered most of its fans through its VHS legacy. Often remakes get dissed by lovers of the original, because they don’t incorporate any of the people involved in the initial making. Such is not the case with the re-awakened Evil Dead.

Sam Raimi, who directed three Spider-Man movies as well as Oz the Great and Powerful hasn’t disregarded his Evil Dead roots, and was a producer of the remake. Robert Tapert, who produced the original film, was also a producer of the new flick as was Bruce Campbell who played the starring role of Ash in the first version.
