Crystal Bowersox on American Idol 2013 and Her New Album – Exclusive
It’s been a few years since Crystal Bowersox nearly took the American Idol crown during Season 9, but we remember her raw and powerful voice like it was yesterday. So what’s the Elliston, Ohio native been up to lately? Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Crystal at the Sundance Film Festival, where she talked to us about her new album, All That For This, released in March from indie label Shanachie Entertainment.
Crystal's sophomore album, a follow-up to 2010′s Farmer’s Daughter, features the same "fusion of emotive folk-rock and country-tinged soul" her fans fell in love with on her first critically-acclaimed release. Produced by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, Rickie Lee Jones, Angelique Kidjo), the album features songs straight from Crystal's heart, as well as a duet with special guest Jakob Dylan.
Plus, Crystal took a few moments to tell us what she thinks of the 2013 American Idol judges — particularly the drama played up between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj earlier this season. Wetpaint Entertainment: What have you been up to lately? Crystal Bowersox: I am just zipping around performing everywhere and anywhere. I’m having a great time. This is my first Sundance and it’s been really special for me What do you think of Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey as the new Idol judges? You know, for me, it’s more about the contestants. I watch the show for the contestants. But I hope as judges they’re having a good time. Do you think the fighting between Nicki and Mariah is detracting from the focus of the show, which are the performances? No I think everyone watches for their own reason. Some people tune in for the judges and that’s fine. Keith and Randy, in my opinion, are my faves. What do you think of Nicki stating that “a girl is going to win this season”? I hope so! I do feel that women have been slighted in the past few seasons, but that’s totally up to the voters. It’s in the hands of the people who call in and vote. At the end of the day, is Idol good for your career? Oh my god, absolutely. It’s the reason I’m here today. Idol has done nothing but good for me in my life. Anyone who graces the stage, if they don’t leave with something positive, it’s their own fault. It’s such a positive, amazing opportunity.
