Edie Falco on Juggling Work and Time With Her Two Kids: “You Just Do the Best You Can”

Between her TV show Nurse Jackie, her turn on Broadway in The Madrid, and taking care of her two kids, Edie Falco is one busy lady. We were lucky enough to catch up with the single mom recently at Disney Live! Mickey’s Music Festival at Madison Square Garden in NYC and talked to her about how she balances work and time with her kids — son Anderson and daughter Macy.

Wetpaint Moms: You are doing Broadway and Nurse Jackie right now. How do you juggle it all and make sure you have time for your kids?

Edie Falco: You just do the best you can. You grab time when you can, you know. Either a breakfast here or they meet me for dinner between shows — it’s always a bit of a mish-mash. There’s no actual schedule, you just do the best that you can.

Do you ever have time to cook at time to cook with your kids?

When I have time, I don’t cook at home. [Laughs] I sit and watch a basketball game with them, but I’ve never been a cooking kind of person.

Macy chimes in: With my brother!

Edie: With her brother. We watch basketball!

What advice do you have for moms on a budget? You mentioned your daughter loves H&M.

The thing is that they grow out of things so quickly, so to buy expensive stuff is kind of not smart. But H&M, man. Their stuff is adorable, fashionable, well-made, and inexpensive!

For when your kids are upset about you going away, is there anything you do to comfort them?

Well, sometimes when I get home from a late night of working, I will wake them up when I get home and we will watch TV together late at night for a bit, which is not always the best plan, but yeah, we’ll have some late night visits sometimes.

In this day and age, there are a lot of different shows and movies that give a bad image for women. Is there anything you’re doing for your daughter to help her overcome that?

No. We haven’t run into that, frankly. She’s still young and she does her own thing, so, so far I don’t have to guide her much. She stays toward stuff that’s interesting and away from stuff that doesn’t seem interesting, and right now it’s all good stuff.
