Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Spoilers: “Season 4 Spoby Is Like Season 3 Spoby”

Everything seemed hunky dory between Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Toby (Keegan Allen) in the Season 3 finale of Pretty Little Liars, but we highly doubt that is going to stick. After all, Toby did put Spence through hell with his seeming betrAyal and fake death. What can we expect from our favorite tortured couple? PLL writer Bryan Holdman weighs in:

“S4 Spoby is like S3 Spoby... but different,” Bryan shared on Twitter yesterday.

What does that mean?! Because Season 3 Spoby was pretty angsty. First, we had Toby lying to Spencer about his membership on the “A” Team. Then, we have Spence’s heartbreaking confrontation when she finds out. Finally, we have Toby’s disappearance and apparent death. All of this added up to Spencer doing a perfect swan dive (because does she ever do anything less than perfect?) into the deep end. It was fun, but heartbreaking to watch and we’re not sure how much more of it we could take.

Could Bryan’s hint have something to do with the spoiler that Toby will be sucked back into “A”’s vortex of lying and deceit? He has his own flashback in the first episode (during which his mother will also appear). Will we be getting more of his backstory? It better be damn good if he thinks Spencer (and we) are going to keep giving him breaks!

Or maybe it might be Spencer who is keeping secrets from Toby? To be fair, she has done it in the past. We assumed her brief stint on the Dark Side was over, but maybe not. Could she be this year’s Toby, slipping further into the clutches of “A”?

Whatever is up, there will most likely be serious (and understandable) trust issues between these two. We just hope that they can work through it, provide some well-intentioned drama, and come out okay on the other side.

What do you think Spoby will look like in Season 4? Let us know in the comments below!
