Awkward! David Letterman Grills Lindsay Lohan on Rehab and Addiction
Late night talk show appearances aren’t really set up for serious discussions on therapy. The studio audience keeps getting in the way with titters and claps. Lindsay Lohan talked to David Letterman on the Late Show, and he really went after her on the subject of her upcoming trip to rehab, and why she’s even going there. Either Lindsay was just pretending to be surprised, or she didn’t expect these rapid-fire personal questions.
Dave: “Aren't you supposed to be in rehab now?”
Lindsay: “Do you not watch anything that goes on in the tabloids now? ... May 2."
Dave: “May 2. And how long will you be in rehab?"
Lindsay: “Three months."
Dave: “How many times have you been in rehab?"
Dave: “How will this time be different? What are they rehabbing, first of all? What is on their list? What are they going to work on when you walk through the door?"
The audience laughed.
Lindsay: "We didn't discuss this in the pre-interview. I'm just saying. ... No, to be honest, I'm happiest when I'm working and healthiest, and I think this is an opportunity for me to focus on what I love in life. And I don't think it's a bad thing. I think it's a blessing."
Dave said it's potentially a life-saver, or at least a career-saver.
Dave: "Do you have an addiction problem?"
Lindsay [pause]: "Now you sound like Dr. Phil."
Dave: "Is it like alcohol. Do you drink too much?"
Lindsay: "We've discussed this in the past."
Dave: "Did we, really? I'm the one who's having the blackouts. ... I outta be in rehab, love o' god! What is wrong with me?"
At another point in the interview, Dave wondered why Lindsay's always in trouble. "I don't know, I couldn't answer that," Lindsay said. "I'm a target, I've always been, and I've put myself in the past in situations where, you know, I take full responsibility for it. And it wasn't funny, and I was being immature and I was going through a phase. And I had a lot of family stuff going on and things in life. And you grow up, you mature — and I've said that a million times, I know that. But what else am I supposed to say when it's a process of life? And I'm not trying to deny anything, any situation that I've been in."
Good for Dave for going hard on her — asking the questions many people watching probably wanted to hear. Or should he have kept things light? It’s not like Lindsay Lohan doesn’t get public punishment enough, on top of her new rehab sentence. She's an easy punching bag, but Dave has had plenty of stars with dubious pasts on his show and he doesn't always grill them. Or do you think he should’ve pushed even more, since LiLo seems to be stuck in a pattern of behavior and maybe some tough love would help? At least she's saying this trip to rehab will be a "blessing." Maybe it will be exactly what she needs. Or maybe she's just saying that, since ... what else is she going to say when put on the spot?
