Once Upon a Time Burning Question: Was Pongo a Human in Fairytale Land?
On Once Upon a Time, everyone has Fairytale Land and Storybrooke counterparts, but there’s one beloved character who we’ve only seen in animal form: Pongo!
In the Disney universe, he is the father dog in 101 Dalmatians, but on OUAT, he’s just Archie Hopper/Jiminy Cricket’s faithful pup. However, we think there may be more than meets the eye.
Pongo isn’t any regular dog. He is smart, has instincts that transcend canine senses, and has saved his owner more than once. He not only witnessed Archie’s simulated murder earlier this season and “showed” the murder to Emma with Mr. Gold’s dreamcatcher, but also alerted his friends to Archie’s condition in the first place.|
We’ve also seen Pongo show a range of human emotions, including being visibly sad at Archie’s funeral and sensing his presence before the erstwhile cricket shows up at Emma’s door alive and well.
Yes, these could all be typical dog emotions, but we have a feeling that Pongo could have also been Jiminy’s companion in Fairytale Land, which could mean a variety of things: he's just a dog and stayed that way, he’s a human who was turned into a dog (perhaps by Regina), or he was an intelligent dog who never turned into a human under the curse (unlike, say, Gus the mouse, who became a mechanic). The Blue Fairy isn’t a teeny tiny flying fairy and Jiminy is, of course, not a cricket, so there is still time for things to change for Pongo — aka getting opposable thumbs.
And if our wishes come true, villain Cruella de Vil — and possibly the other 100 dalmatians from the novel-turned-film — will appear in Storybrooke sooner rather than later.
