American Idol 2013 Recap: Top 6 Performances 4/10/2013 (VIDEOS)

For our American Idol 2013 recap tonight, we finally have a song theme to really sink our teeth into! This week the American Idol Season 12 finalists have two themes for their performances: “The Burt Bacharach-Hal David songbook” and “Songs You Wish You Wrote”. While we could have really done without the first one, we are kind of excited about seeing what the Top 6 do with their American Idol performances for the second theme.

From our American Idol spoilers exclusive interview with the Top 6 earlier today, we know that many of the choices made for tonight’s show were tunes the finalists truly love. We hope the love they have for these songs will translate into beautiful, emotive performances. We’re especially excited by many of the tracks picked out by the contestants for the “Songs You Wish You Wrote” theme half of the show.

Who will shine tonight on American Idol Season 12? Which contestant will find themselves at the bottom of the pack and headed for elimination tomorrow night? Join us below for our live American Idol recap of the Top 6 performances show and find out with us!

And here we go! After a lengthy intro showing the emotional turmoil of losing Burnell Taylor last week, host Ryan Seacrest introduces the Top 6 finalists performing tonight. First up, songs from the Burt Bacharach-Hal David songbook.

American Idol Angie Miller Top 6 Performance: "Anyone Who Had A Heart" by Burt Bacharach/Dionne Warwick

Judges: Keith Urban says Angie looks great tonight and he hopes Angie will still be here for the finale. In fact, he says he’s sure she will be. However, he wants to make sure she doesn’t just rely on her effortless voice. She also needs to make sure she has the passion in there. “You can actually make it look too easy,” he says. Nicki Minaj agrees with Keith that Angie’s voice is so amazing but she wasn’t feeling the passion either with this one. Randy Jackson says he agrees as well and that Angie needs to “digest” the song like it is one she wrote. Mariah Carey says she wants to give a critique that will help with the next performance, not one that is going to tear one down. Mariah Carey says Angie’s enunciation is “so perfect” that it sounds like she is focusing too much on doing it exactly right, and not giving it enough emotion. She says, again, she can’t wait to hear Angie sing something of her own again.

Our Rating: 7.5 out of 10

Angie Miller: 1-866-436-5701

(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5701)

American Idol Amber Holcomb Top 6 Performance: "Say a Little Prayer" by Burt Bacharach/Dionne Warwick

Judges: Nicki Minaj says she is “bowing down for you right now little girl!” She says Amber has just become her absolute favorite girl in the competition. “You chose the perfect song, a song people love, but it didn’t sound old fashioned.” She says “sometimes when your boyfriend ain’t around, you can focus” — teasing about the rumored hookup between her and eliminated contestant Burnell Taylor. Randy Jackson says the “competition just started tonight” with this performance. He loves everything about it. Mariah Carey says it was genius and she loved how Amber took a chance and decided to just be herself. She steals Randy’s classic line that Amber is “in it to win it!” Keith Jackson says the performance was like a “summer breeze” that floated him around and never let him go. Beautiful!

Our Rating: 8.5 out of 10 (we just aren’t as fond as the judges...)

Ryan calls out the bit about the “boyfriend” and teases poor blushing Amber about who it is... Paul? Or maybe Curtis? He, of course, avoids actually saying Burnell’s name.

Amber Holcomb: 1-866-436-5702

(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5702)

American Idol Lazaro Arbos Top 6 Performance: "(They Long To Be) Close To You" by Burt Bacharach

Judges: Randy Jackson says he is “kind of speechless” and that although he loves Lazaro as a person, that was “horrible” all the way around. He feels like he was back in auditions and they were all going “no, no, no” and telling someone to go away. He rips Lazaro a new one. Mariah Carey apologizes for laughing at Randy’s ‘realness’. She says she’s been reprimanded repeatedly for being “too nice” so she’s going to tell it like it is. She says “we can’t go into another key and you stay in the old key... that’s just the end of the song.” She has a very hard time not “being nice” thought and rambles on all over the place trying to basically say, dude, you were terrible. She dearly loves and respects him thought, really. Keith Urban says they are all trying to honor his story and who he is a person and his millions of fans will still love him. However, at this stage in the competition, you just can’t make these kinds of bad song choices, like picking the wrong key and missing a key change. “You’ve gotta have an ear for that brother.” Nicki Minaj says “let’s just pretend I already gave my comment because we’re going to be here all night honey child.”

Our Rating: 2 out of 10 (like, seriously)

Lazaro Arbos: 1-866-436-5703

(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5703)

American Idol Kree Harrison Top 6 Performance: "What The World Needs Now" by Burt Bacharach/Dionne Warwick

Judges: Mariah Carey says “that’s ridiculous” it’s so good. Kree has such a “rare quality” about her, she’s so natural and genuine. She just sounds great and amazing. “I enjoyed that a lot.” Keith Urban says everyone can just feel Kree’s genuine compassion and humanity. He feels like she is someone he can trust, who trusts him, who loves him... it’s squishy. Nicki Minaj says Kree’s voice is so sweet, humble and endearing. It draws you in. “If you’re not performing at the country music awards next year... then my name isn’t Onika Tanya Maraj.” Randy Jackson says “America, that’s what it’s about!”

Our Rating: 9 out of 10

Kree Harrison: 1-866-436-5704

(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5704)

American Idol Janelle Arthur Top 6 Performance: “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again” by Burt Bacharach/Dionne Warwick

Judges: Keith Urban says he loves how he always feels she shows another side of herself. Beautiful. Nicki Minaj thinks Janelle looks very cute. There is no doubt in her mind she could be a huge commercial success, but she though this performance was “really boring.” Randy Jackson agrees that it was kind of lackluster. Mariah Carey says she loves Janelle’s effervescence and personality, but she agrees it wasn’t her best performance.

Our Rating: 6 out of 10

Janelle Arthur: 1-866-436-5705

(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5705)

American Idol Candice Glover Top 6 Performance: “Don’t Make Me Over” by Burt Bacharach/Dionne Warwick

Judges: Standing ovation! (And deserved!) Nicki Minaj says “oh goodness gracious!” She says Candice needs to just soak that in. She says the song didn’t even sound old-fashioned at all, it was like hearing something new and fresh on the radio. She wanted to have a “woman’s revival” after hearing that song. She says Candice was just born to do this. “That was exquisite.” Randy Jackson uses all of his catch phrases. “In it to win it” and “This is what it’s all about” and “best vocal of the night” etc. etc. Mariah Carey says “you took a classic and kept it current and made it you.” She loves it. Keith Urban is all over it too, saying: “That performance alone you just became in my Top 3 tonight.”

Our Rating: 9 out of 10

Candice Glover: 1-866-436-5706

(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5706)

Now it's time for "Songs I Wish I Had Written"

American Idol Angie Miller Top 6 Performance: "Love Came Down" by Kari Jobe

Judges: Angie’s back at the piano, so you know the judges are going to be happy! Standing ovation! Randy Jackson is crazy about it and basically says she needs to staple her piano to her forehead. Mariah Carey says the same and it was crazy good. Keith Urban says someday she will figure out how to sing without the piano just like she does when she is at it. Nicki Minaj says if she’s not crying after an Angie piano performance, something is wrong. She tells her she doesn’t need to stray from doing the Angie behind the piano emotional ballad performance. This is something she does that no one else does and she needs to keep doing it or she’ll be out of here.

Our Rating: 8.5 out of 10 (It just felt a little... forced to us.)

Before Amber performs again, Ryan shows Burnell giving Amber a little kiss as he exited last week. He asks her about it and she says, well.... they are just friends and getting to know each other, etc. etc. Mmmhmmm.

American Idol Amber Holcomb Top 6 Performance: "Love on Top" by Beyonce

Judges: Mariah Carey says it wasn’t her favorite song for Amber, but she liked it. Keith Urban loved the song choice and says they were all dancing. Nicki Minaj says Beyonce better be looking out wherever she is. “You have arrived in every sense of the word... you gave me everything I ever wanted in life honey child, work!” Randy Jackson is all “yes, yes, yes... in it to win it” again. Seriously Randy, get some new sentences!

Our Rating: 7 out of 10

American Idol Lazaro Arbos Top 6 Performance: "Angels" by Robbie Williams

American Idol 2013 Recap: Top 6 Performances 4/10/2013 (VIDEOS)

Judges: Keith Urban says basically the girls are killing Lazaro pretty much. Nicki Minaj just says, yeah, “okay, what he said.” Randy Jackson says this competition is about the girls now. Mariah Carey says it was, um, preferable to the previous performance. The judges are seriously uncomfortable about saying anything to Lazaro at this point.

Our Rating: 2 out of 10

American Idol Kree Harrison Top 6 Performance: “Help Me Make It Through the Night” by Kris Kristofferson

Judges: Nicki Minaj says the difference between Kree and Janelle is that Kree can kill a song even when she isn’t familiar with it. She thinks Kree is very special. Randy Jackson says Kree just sounded at ease and beautiful. Mariah Carey says it is great and rambles about how she sang the song in a movie with director Lee Daniels. Keith Urban says he predicts Kree will become a member of the Grand Ole Opry in the future. He says when people hear her they go “oh, that’s right, that’s real country music.”

Our rating: 8 out of 10

American Idol Janelle Arthur Top 6 Performance: “The Dance” by Garth Brooks

Judges: Randy Jackson says he didn’t think it was her best performance but he loves that it means so much to her. Mariah Carey says she never heard the song before. Really? She thinks Janelle sang with truth and she felt her sing from her heart. Keith Urban says it is a beautiful song and he would have loved to see Janelle do the song just with her guitar and no frills or band backing her up. Nicki Minaj says it was a sweet song and she liked it. She thinks this was a better performance than her first one tonight. However, she doesn’t think it was enough to get leg up over the other girls tonight.

Our rating: 5 out of 10

American Idol Candice Glover Top 6 Performance: “Love Song” by The Cure, as sung by Adele

Judges: Standing ovation from judges, audience, and screaming so loud no one can talk. Candice is in tears. Randy Jackson says on behalf of all the judges it was “one of the greatest performances in twelve years of history of American Idol.” The judges stand up AGAIN. That’s it. Seriously, they don’t even say anything else. That is it.

Our Rating: 10 out of 10 — Just give her the bloody record deal now.
