Who Is Lazaro Arbos? American Idol 2013 Contestant Background Info

American Idol 2013 audition finalist Lazaro Arbos hasn't had an easy life, but he has never given up on his dreams. While some fans of the hit reality TV talent competition don't really like watching the sob stories of the contestants, it is hard not to feel something when you hear Lazaro's history.

During the American Idol 2013 premiere auditions week, Lazaro Arbos wowed the judges with his stellar voice with a rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water." For those who have only seen the singing part of his amazing audition video, they would probably be completely unaware that Lazaro has an incredibly severe speech impediment. In fact, his stutter is so strong, his own mother frequently has tell him, "Sing to me! Sing to me!" Although he has enormous trouble getting out even the simplest of words, Lazaro's singing voice is clear and sweet as a bell.

Lazaro Arbos, a 21-year-old ice cream scooper from Florida, developed his terrible stutter at age six. When his family moved to the U.S. from Cuba, Lazaro's speech problems only got worse. Singing offered him a respite from his difficulties with speech, and Lazaro has showcased his jaw-dropping talent at his local church, as well as on a Miami-based competition show called Aqui Todos Ganan.

After his story brought some of the American Idol 2013 judges to tears, Lazaro stunned them with a performance that was one of the best of the whole premiere week. This time, Lazaro wasn't the one who was left virtually speechless. Keith Urban told the young man he should just "sing all the time" because he was so good.

Sadly, Lazaro really peaked during the pre-Top 10 rounds and quickly fell out of favor with the American Idol judges during the finals. He was often off pitch and frequently forgot his words. He was finally voted off on the Top 6 results show and the judges decided not to use their save to keep him for another week.
