Grey’s Anatomy: Meredith and Derek’s 5 Most Emotional Moments

One of our favorite things about Grey’s Anatomy are the love stories, and one of our favorite couples are Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey). Ever since they met in the bar the night before Meredith’s first day as a surgical intern, we’ve been pulling for them to be together. Although they faced their share of obstacles Addison, annoying random nurse Rose, and Meredith’s trust issues, to name a few this couple became one of the few of Grey’s surgeons lucky enough to get their happy ending.

Here are our top five favorite MerDer moments:

Pick me, choose me, love me (Season 2, Episode 5: “Bring The Pain”): After Derek’s not-quite-ex-wife Addison (Kate Walsh) shows up, commitment phobic Meredith gets a little scared away. And since Derek didn’t exactly jump to sign the divorce papers, she’s not too keen on breaking up a marriage if he’s not totally over it yet. But finally, Meredith decides to fight for him, giving a speech on how much she loves him that Grey’s fans will never forget — and we’re so glad she did.

House of Candles (Season 4, Episode 16: “Freedom”): Meredith’s not over Derek, but Derek’s been dating nurse Rose (Lauren Stamile), so this makes the boundaries they’re trying to keep while they work on their clinical trial together just a little bit hazy. The night of their trial’s first success, Meredith decides she’s all in. She outlines the plans for their dream house in candles and waits for Derek to arrive, and just as she’s thinking she’s done something really stupid, he shows up and Meredith tells him she believes they can be “extraordinary together instead of ordinary apart.” Aww!

Derek’s Elevator Proposal (Season 5, Episode 19: “Elevator Love Letter”): Now that Meredith is over her whole commitment thing, Derek has been waiting for just the right moment to pop the question — and he picks the perfect location. He fills an elevator at the hospital with X-Rays from patients they’ve operated on together, and tells Meredith he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. She quickly agrees. Finally!

Post-It Note Wedding (Season 5, Episode 23: “Now or Never”): After giving their original wedding away to Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and Alex (Justin Chambers), Meredith and Derek realize they don’t want a fancy wedding and decide to go to city hall to make things official. The day they decide to tie the knot, the hospital is too busy for them to find a time to slip away. So instead, they write their own vows on a Post-It note, promising to love each other even when they hate each other — which is really what it’s all about.

Zola’s Adoption (Season 8, Episode 10: “Suddenly”): When Meredith tweaks the Alzheimer’s clinical trial so the chief’s wife, Adele (Loretta Devine) gets the drug and not the placebo, it puts her job and relationship with Derek in jeopardy — and she ultimately loses baby Zola as a result. After MerDer finally kiss and make up, they come home from a long day at work, ready to crash. Not so fast! Social worker Janet (Janora McDuffie) shows up to hand over Zola for real, and we still tear up when Meredith opens the door to find their baby waiting. And Meredith and Derek finally get what they’ve waited so long for — a baby to complete their family.
