Pretty Little Liars Season 1 Rewatch: Was Toby and Emily’s Lab Scene as Awkward as Twilight’s? (VIDEOS)

Pretty Little Liars fans, it’s time for me to come clean: I’ve only watched a few episodes of the hit ABC Family show. I adore the cast and what I’ve seen of it, and I love writing relatively spoiler-free stories at Wetpaint Entertainment, but it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I sat down to watch the entire first season of PLL during a cross-country plane ride.

After watching the first few episodes, I had a lot of feelings. One of them, in particular, was the awkward lab scene between Toby Cavanaugh and Emily Fields way back in Season 1, Episode 4. It wasn’t just the weirdness of the scene that resonated with me, though — it gave me deja vu for another teen hit: Twilight. Is it just me, or did Toby act like he was inhaling Emily’s scent and looking to sink his fangs into her neck as he talked to her from across the room? Why is every moment so uncomfortable? So many questions. It wasn’t as intense as Edward covering his nose and gripping the table, but still — creeper status, Toby!

Once I finished the episode, I quickly watched both scenes on YouTube for comparison, and a few similarities are listed below. Once you read my breakdowns, watch the clips at the bottom of the post and chime in with what you think of the Toby/Emily and Edward/Bella comparison.

• First off: Edward’s hair > vintage Toby’s hair.

• Emily wants to sit next to Toby just about as much as Edward wants to be near Bella. (“Oh please no, not here.”)

• Toby, like Bella, is the new kid in class and is suddenly lab partners with a reluctant person.

• Something uncomfortable causes the scene to abruptly end — Emily finding the photo of her kissing Maya and Edward... smelling Bella.

• While not in this particular scene in Twilight, Toby makes creepy comments (mostly about Em’s scarf) that were very similar to Edward’s weird flirtation with Bella in their next Biology class.

I can’t be the only one who thought of Edward and Bella during this scene... can I? Sound off in the comments if you felt the same way during the awkward lab exchange. And if you think I’ve got it all wrong, feel free to let me know. (Go easy on me, PLL fans.)
