Once Upon a Time Spin-Off: Robert Carlyle Talks Crossover Potential in Wonderland

Spin-offs often bring the possibility of seeing a little extra of our favorite original show’s characters, and we’ve had our fingers crossed about Once Upon A Time’s Wonderland venture since news about the show broke in February.

We have speculated about the possibility of seeing Barbara Hershey’s Cora and Sebastian Stan’s Mad Hatter appear in the spin-off, but we hadn’t thought far beyond that. However, Once Storybrooke’s interview with Robert Carlyle (Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold) has us hoping our favorite gold-spinning baddie might make an appearance in Wonderland.

“From what I understand there is a possibility of a crossover of characters from OUAT to Once Wonderland,” Robert said, stirring hope in our hearts. “Whether it’s practical time-wise is another issue. Our shooting schedules can be so intense I think it would be difficult to do both.”

So, it sounds like there could be a scheduling issue, though given that the shows are produced by the same people, we think there are ways to work it out, especially given the ensemble nature of OUAT where there are sometimes entire episodes in which starring cast members do not appear. Plus, it has already started filming and will potentially air during OUAT's hiatus, which would be a great filler for some of our favorite actors.

Regarding the spin-off, Robert also wanted to give cast member Michael Socha a shoutout — the first actor cast in the pilot who is playing the Knave of Hearts. Michael and Robert apparently worked together in the past and Robert calls him a “ terrific young actor and a really lovely guy.”

“I had the pleasure of working with him a few years ago on a film called ‘Summer,‘“ Robert explained. “There was a scene I remember where I find him lying on the ground covered in vomit. I then had to pick him up and carry him a long way out of shot. Six times. Nearly broke my back. Well done, Michael!”

If Michael has Rumple’s approval, we’re sure he’ll do just fine in Wonderland.
