Glee’s School Shooting: Jane Lynch Responds to Backlash

We're still reeling from last week's beyond emotional "Shooting Star" episode of Glee, in which our favorite whack pack of theater nerds at McKinley High lived through what appeared to be a school shooting.

This controversial episode got its fair share of praise and criticism for the way it handled the harrowing reality of guns in schools, and many people thought it was poorly timed especially since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary is still fresh in our memory.

During the episode, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) took the fall for her favorite Cheerio, Becky (Lauren Potter), who brought a gun to school and accidentally fired it in Sue's office.

“We’re always rather topical and rather current on the show and I think it means a lot to Ryan Murphy that we comment on anything that, especially things, that affect kids,” Jane told Access Hollywood.

“I’m glad he wrote the episode and it was shocking. I was really surprised about the feedback. A lot of people were upset about it. That I feel horrible about. If we added to anybody’s pain, that is just certainly not what any of us wanted.”

Many fans were shocked that Glee chose to have Becky, who has Down Syndrome, bring the gun to school. “I think we are going to offend people… I never do anything artistically worrying, ‘Who are we going to offend?’” Jane explained. “There is a truth to it. There is a truth with someone with a mental illness or intellectual challenge who is given a gun and it’s very dangerous and why should that not be in our art?”

Jane definitely has a point, but choosing to have a character with Down Syndrome be responsible for a school shooting is definitely a controversial statement. Downs is not a mental illness — and as Wetpaint Entertainment exclusively reported — many in the Down syndrome community are concerned about the misunderstanding that this comparison will cause.
