We've been enchanted by the Disney star, and also impressed by Val Chmerkovskiy's ability to rein in his sexy side and come up with dynamic, interesting, but also age appropriate choreography for his 16-year-old partner. Basically, we love them.
However, Zendaya also has her detractors. After all, she has a dance background, and is in fact known for a Disney show focused on dance. Her expertise is hip-hop, not ballroom, but that's a far cry from someone like Week 5 eliminee D.L. Hughley, who could barely shake his hips. DWTS will always have some contestants who start out at a higher level than others but some fans argue that the line should be drawn at stars who dance for a living, even if they don't know ballroom specifically. (Former contestants, such as Season 7 champ Nicole Scherzinger, have drawn similar ire.)
Plus, there's Zendaya's age. Although Val insists "none of this is easy" for Zendaya, some fans think a resilient 16-year-old isn't fair competition for 40 and 50-something actors. Though, of course, is having a young, Olympic gymnast like Aly Raisman compete any more fair, just because she's over the age of 18? We'd argue no — it's all in the game.
Do you think Zendaya has an unfair advantage, or is she just like any other frontrunner: talented, but with plenty of challenges of her own? Vote in our reaction buttons, and sound off in the comments below.
