Reese Witherspoon Arrest: How Will She Explain This to Her Kids?

Reese Witherspoon said she’s embarrassed about the way she acted on Friday morning when she and her husband, James Toth, were arrested in Atlanta — and as much as we love her, she should be.

In a statement to the media, Reese said:

Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.

So here’s the situation: The star and mother of three and her husband, who was driving, were pulled over on Atlanta’s Peachtree Road by Georgia State Trooper First Class J. Pyland.

According to a police report obtained by Variety, James was not staying in his lane and when approached, he had droopy eyelids, watery, bloodshot eyes, and his breath smelled strongly of alcohol. The trooper performed a field sobriety test, and James blew a .139 on the Breathalyzer test. As James was being questioned, the police report says Reese, who was sitting inside the car, became impatient and agitated as the officer warned her to stay in the car. As James was placed under arrest, Reese reportedly exited the vehicle and when she resisted getting back in the car, was placed under arrest.

“Do you know my name?” she is reported to have said to the officer. “No, I don’t need to know your name.” Reese then responded, “You’re about to find out who I am.” It should be known that while the police report makes it sound like Reese pulled the fame card, another source says “it wasn’t like that” and says she was just fearful and being protective of her husband.

The couple was briefly jailed and arrested. James has been charged with driving under the influence, while Reese has been charged with for disorderly conduct (obstruction).

The scary part is not that Reese may have played the “Don’t you know who I am?” card — she’s certainly not the first actor to try to get out of jail free by claiming her fame — but the fact that she has impressionable young children.

What will she tell her kids? Her older children — daughter, Ava, 13, and son, Deacon, 9 — are no doubt old enough to have heard and understood what their mom has done. How do you explain that your mom and stepdad did something that could have gotten themselves — or other innocent people — killed?

We’re not sure we have an answer, but hopefully moving forward, Reese and James will take their children into consideration when they get behind the wheel. Sure, everyone makes mistakes, but all moms and dads, not just the really famous ones, need think twice before doing something as stupid as drinking and driving. Especially those who can very easily afford a cab.
