Emily Deschanel on Struggling to Balance Work and Motherhood: “It Kills Me Every Day”
As one of the lead actors on the hit comedy-crime drama Bones, now in it’s eighth season, and a mother to almost 2-year-old son Henry — whose father is her husband, the actor and writer David Hornsby — Emily Deschanel certainly has her hands full. She shared her thoughts on her struggle to balance work and motherhood during a media conference call today.
“I can’t say that it’s easy,” says Emily. “It kills me every day. Times like this I want to be with him, but I have to do this interview. I’m not saying I don’t want to do the interview, but you’re constantly feeling like you’re pulled both directions.”
It’s sort of comforting to hear that Emily struggles with the same issues of work and life balance that many other moms wrestle with daily. She makes everything look so easy — being a successful actress, a mom, and even a committed animal-rights activist — but as we all know, nothing about parenthood is simple.
“This job, if done well, is extremely difficult,” Emily says of acting. “Parenting is way more difficult than that, if done well. I don’t have a good answer for it. I don’t balance it very well. It gets better and better as he gets older, but it’s hard. I struggle with it every day.”
Hang in there, Emily. We think you’re doing a great job!
