Steubenville Football Coach Gets Two-Year Contract Renewal
In a shocking move, the Steubenville School Board has decided to renew the contract of Coach Reno Sacciola for two more years. Sacciola has been accused of covering up the rape of a 16-year-old West Virginia girl that took place during a series of drunken parties in August. Photos and video were captured on cell phones and widely shared, and the assault sparked nationwide outrage.
Ohio’s attorney general called for a grand jury on April 30 to investigate whether additional charges should be filed in the rape case , and Sacciola’s involvement will likely be investigated.
On March 17, two of Sacciola’s star football players, 17-year-old Trent Mays and 16-year-old Ma’Lik Richmond, were found guilty, or “delinquent” as they call it in juvenile court, after a four-day trial.
Not surprisingly, news about Saccoccia’s contract extension has been met with anger. An online petition calling for for his removal has accumulated almost 135,000 as of this writing.
Steubenville School Superintendent Mike McVey told WTOV that the vote had nothing to do with Saccoccia’s coaching contract, which is a separate issue, but rather his contract as the director of administrative services.
