Nick Cannon Says Mariah Carey Doesn’t Need American Idol Job (VIDEO)

Did American Idol 2013 producers really consider replacing Mariah Carey with former judge Jennifer Lopez mid-season? Even if they did, Mariah’s husband Nick Cannon says it’s no big deal because it’s not like the gig is that important to her career.

"Whatever happens with that show, I think she's had a great time. But she's a global superstar. I don't think she's ever in need of a job," Cannon told Access Hollywood recently. "She made a decision to do that show because she really wanted to connect with the contestants. I don't think she's thinking about the future of it."

An anonymous source reportedly close to the show told The Hollywood Reporter that American Idol 2013 producers wanted to replace Mariah Carey with former judge Jennifer Lopez midway through the season. Mariah just wasn’t bringing in the ratings and they allegedly hoped the shakeup would boost falling viewership.

After the rumors hit the press, FOX spokeswoman released a press statement to THR claiming the whole thing was “just another ridiculous ‘Idol’ judge rumor, likely started by talks of Jennifer [Lopez] performing on the finale.” American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe also denied the rumor. "I have not been included in any conversation regarding replacing Mariah with Jen this season," Lythgoe said. A rep for Mariah Carey herself told Access Hollywood there was “no truth to this at all.”

However, THR continues to stand behind the allegations that FOX was planning to replace Mariah Carey with Jennifer Lopez. “I think she fired off a very terse legal letter saying that should she be pushed out they would irreparably damage her career and then the idea was scrapped,” THR reporter Shirley Halperin told Access Hollywood.

True or not, Nick Cannon pretty much has the final word here. It’s not like Mariah Carey needs the gig on American Idol 2013. Personally, we doubt she’ll be back for American Idol 2014 after all the issues and negative criticism she’s dealt with this year. Why should she bother with all that petty stuff when she’s Mariah Carey, right?
