Victoria’s Secret Responds to Christian Model Who Quit “to Be a Proverbs 31 Wife”
It's not exactly breaking news that Victoria's Secret models are objectified. But Kylie Bisutti, now 23, says she always wanted to be a model and was thrilled when she beat 10,000 other girls in the 2009 Victoria’s Secret Angel Search competition. But she has a new book out, I’m No Angel, detailing how the skimpy clothing, sexed-up photos and pressure to flirt with men — even though she’s married — prompted her to quit modeling. She no longer wanted to feel like “a piece of meat."
Kylie shared some of her story to the New York Post on April 23: "I was traveling with my husband on a business trip and, from the hotel room, I sent out my own tweet. 'I quit being a VS model to be a Proverbs 31 wife.' (Proverbs 31 talks about being a virtuous and capable wife that a husband can trust. It says, 'Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.')"
She explained what she was giving up and why:
"Quitting modeling has probably cost me millions of dollars. Victoria’s Secret Angels have the longest careers in the business. Even after they stop modeling lingerie, they can go on to host TV shows, like Heidi Klum, or design clothes, like Gisele. But I’ve never been more content. These days, I’m living in Montana with my husband. Mike is the best Italian cook, and just last night, we canned 40 jars of fresh pasta sauce. I no longer restrict what I eat. I weigh 124 pounds right now, but my ideal weight is 125. I want young girls to see me at a healthy size. After my infamous tweet, I turned down an offer to do 'Dancing With the Stars' and an opportunity to act on a show on The CW because I didn’t think it was promoting the right message. I didn’t want to dance with a man other than my husband on the reality show or shoot scenes in a bikini for The CW." Read more from her here.
Victoria's Secret responded in an exclusive statement to People:
“Ms. Bisutti has made numerous fabrications and misstatements of fact regarding her brief association with Victoria’s Secret. In 2009, Ms. Bisutti won an online amateur modeling competition and hasn’t worked for us since that year. The prize for the winning contestant was the unique opportunity to a one-time walk in the 2009 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Ms. Bisutti also participated in a swim photo shoot in 2009. That was the extent of Ms. Bisutti’s involvement with Victoria’s Secret. She was never a Victoria’s Secret ‘Angel’ as defined by the terms of our Angel model contract. And contrary to Ms. Bisutti’s claims, she was never offered any subsequent modeling contracts or opportunities with Victoria’s Secret despite her multiple appeals for further work. She has repeatedly fabricated her work experience with Victoria’s Secret — including a relationship that simply did not exist.”
Hmm. But at least she has a book deal! What do you think about this?
