Mariah Carey And Nicki Minaj Avoid Interviews Amidst Rumors Of Idol Shakeup

In the wake of the big announcement that American Idol 2013 producers attempted a mid-season swap of Jennifer Lopez for Mariah Carey at the judges table, neither Mariah or Nicki Minaj stopped for post-show backstage interviews this past week.

The reason for Mariah’s media diss is obvious, but Nicki’s is likely due to the prevalent rumors that she, too, is being replaced for next season after not connecting with Idol’s core audience.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the scandalous story about the mid-season switcheroo, the current demographic for American Idol is “a Midwestern, Southern, older woman who is threatened by Nicki’s aggressiveness.” Wow! After we posted our “5 Ways American Idol Could Make a Comeback” article, we noticed the overwhelming response by Wetpaint readers was to oust Nicki as well.

Apparently, most of the remaining girls in the competition are staunchly in Mariah’s corner. In fact, Kree Harrison even said backstage, “I would love to meet J.Lo. but I don’t wanna see [Mariah] go nowhere because I love her, you know.” In a typical PR move, E! Online reports that Kree was subsequently “rushed off to another interview by a publicist.” Oh, the timing!

Angie Miller is with Kree, saying, it was “so weird hearing [the reports]. I say forget it!” Amber Holcomb may have let out a little hint that she might be for the switch, however. After Ryan Seacrest announced a “big surprise,” Amber reportedly said, “I think somebody’s coming back!” a little too excitedly.

Where do you fall on this debate? Should the show get rid of Mariah, Nicki, or both?
