Pretty Little Liars Spoilers: Season 4 Style Sneak Peek

PopSugar has an inside interview with Pretty Little Liars Costume Designer Mandi Line, who reveals the secrets behind the Liars’ style, as well as gives a fashion sneak peek of the upcoming season. So, how does Mandi describe each of the Liars’ styles?

She calls Aria’s (Lucy Hale) style “schizophrenic”: “She’s different in every scene.” There are some commonalities, says Mandy. Aria's must-have item is a black boot and her color is black.

“To channel your inner Aria is to have no fear,” says Mandi. That’s probably good because Marlene King has called this season “killer,” and has also teased an homage to Hitchcockian horror classic The Birds. Aria’s going to need to be fearless.

Mandi previewed one of Aria’s outfits from the upcoming season: A black leather mini-skirt, white tee with heart motif, black fringe vest, and black boot (of course). Aria’s outfit is “something that no one’s seen yet” and one of Mandi’s favorite outfits from the season so far. It also hints that heartbreak over the Ezria breakup won’t be keeping Aria down. This girl is as bold as before!

Hanna’s (Ashley Benson) must have is a great heel, says Mandi. Her signature color is pink, and her style could be described as “on-trend.” Much like Aria, Hanna has a fearlessness of her own when it comes to fashion.

“Hanna has no fear of color. Hanna has no fear of patterns. But what she does, she does it ultra-femme,” said Mandi. “She puts on a whole facade because, next scene, she’ll be like making out with Caleb in the corner.”

We’re hoping that is still the case in Season 4! Things were never really resolved between Hanna and Caleb when it came to the church bell incident. Does Caleb blame Hanna for convincing him that Jamie was involved?

Mandi describes Spencer’s (Troian Bellisario) style as “preppy with a twist.” Her must have is a good coat and her color is navy. She also finds Spencer the hardest to dress, in part because Troian is so stylish in real life: “I get nervous dressing her.”

It will be interesting to see if Spence’s style changes at all in Season 4. The end of Season 3 saw Spencer abandoning her signature blouses and blazers for sweaters and jeans (it looked comfy). Will her foray into the Dark Side continue to change her personal style?

Emily (Shay Mitchell) is all about denim, according to Mandi. Jean jacket. Jean vest. Jean jeans. “I don’t think you can have enough denim in that girl’s closet,” said Mandi, who describes Emily’s style as “laid back and cool.”

“It’s almost like all the rules are being broken here. Too much denim. Too much overkill,” said Mandi. But somehow, it works for Emily. Maybe because she wears it so fiercely. In Season 3, we saw Emily really stepping up and leading the “A” investigation in Spencer’s absence. Her style got edgier to reflect that, though she's still the jeans-and-a-t-shirt girl at heart.

“All I want to do is for Emily to [say] once, ‘What do you have on, Aria?’” laughed Mandi. “I don’t know why these girls hang out, but they do.”
