Gossip Girl Star Kelly Rutherford: My Custody Battle Left Me Broke
The characters on Gossip Girl may have lived lives of privilege and luxury, but off-screen, one of the show's stars has lost it all.
Kelly Rutherford, who starred as socialite Lily van der Woodsen on the CW hit, says that her custody battle with ex-husband Daniel Giersch has left her in financial ruin.
In a new interview with E! News, the 44-year-old actress admits that she has spent nearly all of the money she earned during her five-year run on the show trying to regain custody of her children, whom a judge sent to live abroad with German-born Giersch.
"I've spent every penny," she says. "Every penny from Gossip Girl, my pension, my stocks has been spent fighting for my children."
Kelly claims she has spent “millions of dollars” paying legal fees and travelling to see her two children, Hermes, 6, and Helena, 3, who currently live in Monaco with their father, leaving her with so little money, she’s had to give up her rented apartment and move into a friend’s house.
However, the actress says she doesn’t care if she has a cent to her name as long as she can regain custody of her kids.
"I said, 'I don't want any money, I don't want anything, let's figure out a great plan for the kids,'" she says. "The relationship was obviously not working. And, four years later, this is where I am."
