What Is the Other Side? Vampire Diaries Fan Question

The supernatural laws on The Vampire Diaries can get a little confusing. For example, hybrids can have babies now? Many people are puzzled about the Other Side, and we can’t blame them. The mystical realm is still a bit of a mystery, but here’s what we know about the place Silas is hoping to destroy.

Created by Qetsiyah, the Other Side is a world inhabited by supernaturals. Vampires, witches, anyone who isn’t fully human, goes there after they die. This is not a hard and fast rule, however, as Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) is not on the Other Side and has found peace, despite being a vampire when she died.

Qetsiyah intended for Silas to take the vampirism cure and join her on the Other Side for eternity. She made the world for just that purpose, because she didn’t want him to be reunited with his true love, who was human.

While witches can communicate with each other, deceased vampires don’t have contact with one another. Bonnie (Kat Graham) once channeled 100 dead witches, who still have their powers and could affect the mortal world.

The two dimensions have been in contact before. Back in Season 3, Bonnie and Esther (Alice Evans) opened a door between them, and several ghosts — including Mason (Taylor Kinney) and Lexi (Arielle Kebbel) — returned to earth.

Sometimes humans can have contact with the spirit world as well. After coming back from the dead, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) was able to see Vicki’s (Kayla Ewell) and Anna’s (Malese Jow) ghosts. Alaric (Matt Davis) also communicated with Esther several times before his Gilbert ring resurrected him.

The look and feel of the Other Side hasn’t been described. While Anna said she was lonely, Rose (Lauren Cohan) claimed to have found peace there.

If Silas’s spell has worked, the “veil” between the mortal world and the Other Side will dissolve, allowing ghosts of vampires, witches, hybrids, and all manner of supernatural creatures to return to Mystic Falls (and beyond, presumably). Season 4, Episode 22 is titled “The Walking Dead,” so it seems pretty likely we’ll see a familiar undead face or two soon.
