Awkward’s Beau Mirchoff Teases “Pretty Sad Stuff” For Matty in Season 3 — Exclusive

Matty McKibben is back, and dare we say, more shirtless than ever on Season 3 of MTV’s hit show Awkward. The first two episodes of the season have left Matty (Beau Mirchoff) and Jenna (Ashley Rickards) is a bit of a, well, for lack of a better word, awkward position. He’s not exactly pleased that his girlfriend kept her pregnancy scare to herself. But what does this mean for the couple’s future?

Wetpaint Entertainment recently caught up with Beau in New York City, and he dished on Matty and Jenna’s drama, meeting Matty’s family for the first time and stripping (again) on camera. (Hint: "I think my shirt is off in almost every episode.")

Wetpaint Entertainment: This season of Awkward. has gotten off to an absolutely brilliant start. It seems like there’s been a bit of tonal shift between the first two seasons and Season 3. It feels a little more grown up!

Beau Mirchoff: Yeah, the show has certainly evolved, for the better. All of the characters now know who they are, and they’re all intertwined with each other. It’s not just about the protagonist and her life. It’s kind of about everyone now, and everyone is kind of interested in everyone’s stories. So that makes for an exciting Season 3. I mean, in the first two episodes, there are a few monumental events that happen, and they act as a catalyst for the rest of the season.

For sure! You have death and a pregnancy scare!

If you think the first two episodes are crazy, just wait until later. I’m not even kidding you. Stuff happens that you can’t even fathom.

What other high school tropes are there left to cover? You already had a Shiva and a pregnancy scare in one episode.

The Shiva! There’s a lot that happens, actually. There are some really crazy things that are unexpected. Even when I read it, I was like, “Are we really doing this? This is crazy.” But that’s exciting! Usually shows, after a few seasons, start to waver too far away from what they originally were, but [Awkward.] is doing something that’s totally original. It’s cool.

It’s evolving! Which viewers really appreciate. There’s also Matty, who as a character, is evolving too. This is kind of the first time we’re seeing him in a committed relationship. At the beginning of the season, Matty and Jenna are in the Honeymoon stage...

Yeah, it definitely doesn’t stay like that. They spent the summer together in a bubble. They were literally at summer camp, where there was no distractions and no pressure to do anything. But once they get back to reality with all of their high school insecurities, who knows what will happen.

I don’t know about you, but when Jenna chose to stay with Matty for the summer, it reminded me of that Hills moment where Lauren chose her boyfriend over Paris.

Right! That episode! I couldn’t believe that! You took the words right out of my mouth.

Summer camp also seems to be a huge part of your life.

Everything revolves around summer camp! You know what’s funny? I recently watched Wet Hot American Summer. It was on Netflix, and I hadn’t seen it in a really long time. I find that movie to be so stupid and hilarious. It’s so great. That first scene with David Hyde Pierce, where he says no and flips out is hilarious. I love that movie.

Now, getting back on track. I have to say this was a record for you. I think Matty was shirtless within the first 10 seconds this season!

I think you’re right. You know what? I would like there to be a tally among all the men on TV for amount of shirts off per episode because I think Matty McKibben might take that crown in Season 3.

He would take the crown away from the CW boys?

Yeah. For amount of shirts off per episode. I think my shirt is off in almost every episode.

Glad to see some things never change, unlike Jake, who underwent a European makeover of sorts.

The scarf, the hair, the funny little names they call each other... I don’t know if he’ll maintain that look throughout the season. It’s cool to dress like that when you’re over there in Europe, but when you get back into your native land maybe the pressures of normal society will take over.

At the end of the second episode, Matty finds out about Jenna’s pregnancy scare. How does that play out for Matty and Jenna?

I don’t know if Matty knows it yet, but he is evolving, and this moment is him finally being able to be honest with how he feels. He wouldn’t have done that in previous seasons. Hopefully, Jenna will be mature enough to have an adult conversation with him, and they will be able to move forward.

Jake had that great line in Episode 2, when Matty was going through his YOLO stage, where he said Matty told him he only used the “L” word to sleep with a girl.

Right! I think that definitely shows how far Matty has come since the first season. He used to be that kind of guy, and now he’s starting to open up to Jenna. Now, he needs her to do the same.

We also meet Matty’s family this season, right? What can we expect?

It’s a big storyline for Matty this year. Matty’s parents are exposed, and you get more insight into how he lives and why he is the way he is. With Matty’s parents, there’s an event that happens, and you get to see that it’s not all flowery for Matty. There’s some pretty sad stuff going on.

So it’s not all YOLO-ing?

No, not at all. I can’t wait for people to see it.

Are you excited for this season of Awkward.? Sound off in the comments!
