It’s a truth universally acknowledged amongst Glee fans — Burt Hummel (Mike O’Malley) is the greatest father in the entire world.
Burt and his son, Kurt(Chris Colfer), couldn’t be more different, but that has never stopped the kind-hearted auto store owner from doing everything he can to support and encourage his son.
He’s the type of father all gay sons dream of having — really, he’s the type of father everyone dreams of having. Burt watches football; Kurt reads Vogue. It might not always be easy for they two to understand each other, but they never stop trying.
When Burt had a heart attack back in Glee Season 2, we were literally in tears at the thought of losing him. Yet Burt managed to survive, and we thought we were in the clear. Until now.
In Glee’s Season 4 Christmas episode, Burt revealed that he now has prostate cancer. Cheating death one time seems totally reasonable, but twice? We began to worry that Burt really might be gone for good this time.
Luckily, Glee creator Ryan Murphy is here to calm our fears. “Burt won't die,” he tweeted on January 18. “My father died of prostate cancer. Wouldn't put Kurt through that.”
Take heart. Burt Hummel isn’t gone for good. He and Kurt may have a long, hard road ahead of them — but that road is not going to end with Burt’s untimely death.
