Kris Kross Rapper Chris Kelly Dead at 34: What Was the Cause of Death?

UPDATE: According to an Atlanta police report (via People), the night before Chris died, he had been taken home by his mother after consuming a combination of cocaine and heroin. He felt nauseous and passed out on Wednesday afternoon before his mother called 911. Paramedics found him unresponsive on the living room couch and couldn't revive him through CPR. Chris's' uncle told police the 34-year-old "had an extensive history of drug abuse." An official cause of death is pending toxicology tests.

Original story:

The tragic death of rapper Chris Kelly at age 34 continues to be a mystery.

Authorities still do not know the exact cause of death at the moment of the Kris Kross rapper, although a scheduled autopsy on the morning of May 2 should clear up some of the mystery.

At this point, authorities do not suspect foul play, according to BET.

Chris was found unconscious in his Atlanta home on May 1 at around 4:30 p.m.

He was then taken to the Atlanta Medical Center South, where he was pronounced dead just after 5 p.m.

Chris's mother Donna released a statement through So So Def Records.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1," Donna says. "To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris — the kind, generous, and fun-loving life of the party."

"Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him," she continues. "His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him."

Legendary Atlanta radio personality DJ Gregg Street said he received a call from Chris's cousin, who informed him that Chris had been found unresponsive twenty minutes prior.

"Sad to hear the loss of my lil homie, Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly," Gregg says, explaining that Chris was like "family."

Chris and fellow Kris Kross member Chris Smith parted ways in the '90s, but they had recently reunited to perform tunes in February 2013 for the 20th anniversary of So So Def.

The backwards clothes-wearing duo had huge success in the early '90s with hits like "Jump" and "Warm It Up."

We hope that the autopsy report will provide Chris's family with some closure.
