Vampire Diaries Originals Speculation: Why Can’t Klaus Kill Marcel?

If there’s one thing we can say about Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) on The Originals, it’s that he’s a pretty good king — as long as you’re a vampire. It’s all karaoke and parties. Witches and humans don’t fare nearly as well under his reign, so maybe that’s how Klaus (Joseph Morgan) can snatch power.

We asked The Vampire Diaries fans about their biggest questions for the season so far, and one frequent one we received is why doesn’t Klaus simply kill Marcel? The younger vampire has everything Klaus has ever wanted: “Power. Loyalty. Family.”

In The Originals backdoor pilot, Marcel lists his accomplishments since Klaus left New Orleans. “Vampires rule this city now,” he says. “We don't have to live in the shadows like rats. The locals know their place. They look the other way. I got rid of the werewolves. I even found a way to shut down the witches. The blood never stops flowing and the party never ends.”

It’s all fine and dandy, until someone breaks the king’s rules. Then they die. Marcel’s subjects love him — but they also fear him. If Klaus came in and killed his old protégé, he might gain the loyalty of the witches, who haven’t been able to practice magic under Marcel’s rule. But what about the vampires? Would they transfer that loyalty and respect to a new king so easily?

We can’t help but think of Game of Thrones, when Cersei Lannister tells Joffrey, “When Aerys Targaryen sat on the Iron Throne, your father was a rebel and a traitor. Someday, you'll sit on the throne, and the truth will be what you make it.” The New Orleans vampires might fall in line — or they could rebel.

Klaus has an eternity — literally — to reclaim the city. With strategic moves and plotting, he could undercut Marcel’s power and win respect for himself. Right now, he’s a legend, a “bedtime story,” as Sophie says. He’ll need more than that if he truly wants to be a king who’s not just feared but loved.
