American Idol Ratings Reach Another Record Low For Thursday’s Results Show

American Idol ratings his yet another record low on Thursday night, May 2. If the former ratings juggernaut could pin it down to just one thorn in its side this season, it would have to be CBS’ The Big Bang Theory. The monster hit of a sitcom crushes Idol week after week.

Despite cutie pie Harry Connick, Jr.,
David Cook, and appearing on last night’s star-studded Top 3 results show, CBS easily won over FOX. In fact, American Idol hit yet another new low among the target demographic of young adult viewers 18-49.

Overall, CBS averaged a 2.7 rating among adults 18-49 and 12.02 million viewers. FOX came in second with a 2.2 rating in that group and 8.1 million viewers. ABC was third with a 2.2 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.75 million viewers. NBC was fourth with a 1.4 rating and 2.94 million viewers and the CW was last with a 0.8 rating and 1.69 million viewers.

If you’ve been paying attention to the ratings lately, there’s nothing new in these numbers. FOX usually wins Wednesday nights, as they did this week despite a record low. Still, they almost always come in at second place next to CBS on Thursday nights. The other networks always seem to go in that order as well.

What is surprising is that Idol is pratically at the end season when most fans usually decide to hop aboard the viewing train. Instead, the show continues its steady decline. At this point, the powers that be at Idol are likely eying next season, looking to revamp a dying show and calculating ways to breathe new life into it.

How do you think American Idol could get back to its ratings of yore?
