Teacher Buys ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ For 14-Year-Old Without Parental Consent

In the teacher’s defense, it’s nice to see a youngster so interested in such an “out-there” form of literature as Fifty Shades of Grey, but it’s Fifty Shades of Grey! Was there really no hesitation? According to NBC, the teacher didn’t even think to ask the child’s mom.

Philip Aidoo, a 9th grade teacher at Eastern University Academy Charter School in the East Falls section of Philadelphia, asked his students for a list of books they would like for an independent reading period. One of his students requested E.L. James’s raunchy novel, and, oblivious to the heavy sexual theme throughout the book, he bought it for the student with his own money, causing an outrage with the student’s mother, Maya Ladson.

“It clearly states on the cover, that the book is for mature audiences and has high sexual content,” Maya told NBC10. “This was a 100 percent act of negligence. There should never be pornographic material purchased and distributed to a student by a school teacher.”

After a disciplinary meeting between Maya and Philip left the mother unsatisfied with the school’s idea of a reprimand, she filed a grievance with the school’s board of trustees. The board finally decided to suspend the teacher without pay for one week, but Maya is still not satisfied.

“We all agree that it was a very serious mistake, however, it does not warrant a termination,” said the school’s Chief Operating Officer Yvonne Turner.

Since the incident, Maya has made arrangements with the school to move her son into another class for the remainder of the school year, and she has also been the catalyst for a new policy that requires all purchases for students to be pre-approved.

Maya maintains that her son’s education has been compromised, and has plans to protest outside of her son’s school with other parents. Talk about embarrassing!

How do you think the school handled the Fifty Shades controversy? Did the teacher receive too much or too little punishment?
