Vampire Diaries Originals: Questions About Klaus and Hayley’s Baby

When Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) showed up in New Orleans carrying Klaus’s (Joseph Morgan) baby on Season 4, Episode 20 of The Vampire Diaries, we were all, “Whaaaaaaat?!” until our brains exploded. But now that the dust has settled and we’ve had a chance to deal with the storyline’s logical problems, we’re feeling better. And we have questions.

First of all, what kind of supernatural is this wee one gonna be? Klaus is a hybrid, Hayley’s a werewolf, and this kind of procreation is a whole new thing. There are no rules here. Is being a hybrid a recessive trait, like having red hair? Or can this baby only be a werewolf, since werewolves (or potential werewolves, anyway) are born, whereas no one is born a vampire. So, being a werewolf is an inherited trait, whereas as vampirism is... a transmitted condition? We did not cover this in science class.

Next up, will Baby Klayley be immortal? This is always a complicated question when it comes to babies with supernatural parents (which we maybe spend too much time thinking about), because if it is immortal, when does it stop growing? Is there some arbitrary point at which it is considered grown-up and immortality sets in? If we know TVD, the rules are simple: you become immortal when you’ve reached maximum hotness. Done and done.

We have to admit, we have some questions/concerns about Klaus as a dad. Yes, we’re sure his baby will be the most well-protected baby on the planet, because deep down Klaus can be a softie and he’s ruthless when it comes to defending his family (unless they’ve crossed him, but nbd). But the man’s got some serious daddy issues, and that never bodes well.

Finally, we have a question about Klaus’s other family members. Namely: Rebekah (Claire Holt). Girl wants the cure so badly because she wants to have a family and grow old, and she’s got a bit of a jealous streak, so we can’t imagine this news is going to go over well. Maybe she can hang around as a kind of Aunt-slash-nanny? Godmother? Or something? We’re just trying to get her involved here.

Those are just a few of the thoughts we have rattling around about this whole hybrid heir situation, but we know you must have some too! What are you thinking? Does it make sense to you? Why or why not? Let us know!
