Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time Speculation: Is Peter Pan Evil or Just Misunderstood?

Anyone else have nightmares about the Peter Pan Shadow featured in last night’s episode of Once Upon a Time or was it just us? OUAT co-creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis were understating when they said Peter may not be the “lovely, cuddly shadow we remember.” Still, we’re not ready to give up on the Lost Boy just yet. Is Peter Pan really evil or is there more to his story?

Yes. He is a creepy shadow of doom!

There’s nothing worse than finding out the magical land you’ve imagined since you were tiny is actually an isle of despair, but that’s exactly what happened to Wendy (and us) in last night’s episode (Season 2, Episode 21: “Second Star to the Right”). Wendy seems like a pretty respectable sort, so when she tells us that Neverland is some sort of prison island that seems awesome at first, but where every child spends the nights crying, trapped there by the shadow, we probably believe her.

This also would explain even more about Bae/Neal’s resentment toward Rumple. I mean, the man had more than enough material for therapy just with the sob story of magical corruption and paternal abandonment, but now we find out he was also tugged to Neverland by a nefarious shadow, and Neal has a lot to be upset about. After all, if Rumple had gone with Bae, the two could have set up a father/son shoe-shining business on the streets of Victorian London, and everything would have been hunky-dory.

No. This is unfounded propaganda!

So far, we have not properly met Peter Pan for ourselves. Our impressions of both Peter and Neverland have come entirely from Wendy (save for a hair-raising flight through London and an aerial glimpse of the isle). She seems cool, but maybe she’s not trustworthy? Conversely, maybe she really believe these things about Neverland, but they were relayed to her by an untrustworthy source (i.e. Hook)?

There’s also the chance that the shadow is not, in fact, Peter Pan. In the classic tale, Peter’s shadow gets away and Wendy sews it back onto Peter for him. Could Peter’s shadow be causing trouble on its own? Or, could it be some sort of spooky (and highly effective) recruitment tool used by Hook to keep his ship well-manned? Someone has to swab the decks, and we don’t think Hook’s nub has a Swiffer WetJet attachment.

Basically, we’re not ready to completely write Peter Pan off as evil until we learn more about him. On OUAT, there’s always more to the story. What is the rest of Peter’s story?

Do you think Peter Pan is a hero or a villain? Let us know in the comments below!

Catch the next episode of Once Upon a Time on Sunday, May 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
