Once Upon a Time Season 2 Finale: Is Regina Going to Die?
Once Upon a TimeSeason 2 has put a major focus on Regina (Lana Parrilla) and her faltering attempts to redeem herself. Based on the preview for the Season 2 finale, Season 2, Episode 22: "And Straight On 'Til Morning," she'll get a major chance to prove herself by helping to stop the failsafe that just a few episodes ago she wanted to put into action. But could that prove deadly?
In the preview for the episode we see that Greg and Tamara activate the failsafe, which should bring about the total annihilation of Storybrooke. We see Regina say that the failsafe can't be stopped — but she can try to slow it down, presumably so that the Charmings et al. can try to find a solution (maybe get the beans back so they can get to another world?). In the preview, we see Regina struggling to hold back the failsafe magic, saying, "I can't contain this much longer."
We can't be the only ones who immediately worried for Regina's safety, right? She's at the heart of the trouble; she's on top of the bomb, as it were. Even if the Charmings do find a way to get out of town, could Regina take it without letting the failsafe go off? The showrunners have hinted that there's the possibility that someone will die in the finale. Could Regina bite it?
On one hand, redemption-via-death is a pretty classic arc. Regina sacrificing herself to save the town (and Henry!) would be the ultimate proof that she can value others over herself. Indeed, if this promo were for the series finale, we'd lay pretty good odds on Regina dying.
That said, this isn't a series finale, and Regina is a major character who both the fans and the writers love. We seriously doubt she will die; nothing in the way Lana Parrilla talks about the finale suggests it's her last hurrah. We're guessing that, far from being the end of her redemption, Regina's act of self-sacrifice this week will be just one more step in the story — one she somehow survives. Perhaps it will puts her in a new light for Emma and the Charmings.
What do you think: Is Regina in danger, or is she sure to get out of this episode alive? Do you think her sacrificing herself for everyone would be a satisfying conclusion to her story, or do you want her to get a real happy ending? Sound off in the comments below!
