Shocking Secret From Cher’s Mom: She Almost Had an Abortion!
On the Lifetime documentary Dear Mom, Love Cher, Cher’s mom Georgia Holt dropped a bomb: she almost had an abortion. Cher was almost never born!
Cher’s mom had separated from Cher’s dad and had moved back in with her own mother. But when Georgia’s mother found out that she was pregnant, she presented her with an ultimatum: get back together with your husband, or get an abortion.
Georgia says she made it as far as the waiting room, but when they called her name, she said she couldn’t do it — so her mom demanded she get back together with her husband.
Cher was born in 1946, and in that post-depression America, poverty-motivated abortions were common — and since abortion wasn’t legal in America until 1973, many abortion practices were unsafe, even lethal.
Georgia was apprehensive about doing the special and letting all those secrets out at first. “I thought, this could be tricky,” Georgia told USA Today, “But what’s anyone going to do to me now? So I come from a poor white trash background. It doesn’t make any difference.”
That’s kind of a pessimistic view of why to let it all out, but we’re glad you were able to share your story, Georgia! Of course it makes a difference.
The documentary arrives alongside 86-year-old Georgia’s new album, a lifetime dream of hers.
