Will Someone Die in the Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 Finale? Shonda Rhimes Says…
When a major superstorm hits Grey Sloan Memorial in the Season 9 finale of Grey’s Anatomy, one doctor’s life will hang in the balance by the episode’s end. But does that mean Shonda Rhimes is killing off yet another of her main characters? She recently teased, "We will leave the season with someone fighting for their life."
Now, we know what you’re thinking: why does Shonda have to kill everybody? However, according to Shonda, her death count is relatively low.
“Everyone thinks I kill everybody — and I don’t,” she told TV Line. “I was doing a tally and I’ve only killed three series regulars [while] four series regular [characters] just left into the ether somewhere to do other things in other hospitals. I don’t kill everybody.”
But that still doesn’t mean all of the docs will survive this season. And after pregnant Meredith took that fall in the Season 9, Episode 23 promo, she and her McBaby could be likely suspects. Shonda already said the season finale is full of “a lot of emotional death.” However, nothing will quite match the “brutality” of the Season 8 finale, which saw all of our favorite docs involved in a deadly plane crash that claimed the lives of Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan. (We’re still not over it.)
"I just watched it again recently and was kind of surprised myself about the brutality of it, she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I don't think we're going to match that but for a lot of our characters, it's a much more emotional."
OK, so if docs aren’t dying, then are they splitting up? Calzona fans better brace themselves for the finale because Callie and Arizona’s relationship may also hang in the balance by the season’s end. Shonda told TV Line that Arizona’s flirtation with craniofacialist Lauren (Hilarie Burton) will go “very, very far.”
So if she’s not killing our favorite doctors, she’s potentially splitting them up. Love you too, Shonda!
