7-year-old Suspended For Playing With Pencil Like a Gun

Second-grade student Christopher Marshall was only playing when he wielded his pencil like a gun at school, but school officials didn’t find it was very playful. They ended up suspending him over the incident.

Fox 43 News reports that last Friday, the 7-year-old Marshall pointed a pencil at another student in his classroom at Driver Elementary School in Suffolk, Va., and made a noise like a gun. It turns out Christopher’s school has a “zero tolerance” policy when it comes to weapons, so the school’s administrators took action and suspended him and the other boy, also age 7.

Paul Marshall, Christopher’s father and a former Marine, says his son was simply "being a Marine and the other guy was being a bad guy." Christopher’s parents believe the school overreacted.

Bethanne Bradshaw, a spokesperson for Suffolk Public Schools, says some children would consider Christopher's game "threatening." "Kids don't think about 'Cowboys and Indians' anymore, they think about drive-by shootings and murders and everything they see on television news every day," Bradshaw said.

Both students were suspended for two days before being allowed back to school.
