American Idol 2013 Recap: Is Candice Glover the New Frontrunner? 5/8/2013 (VIDEOS)

In our American Idol 2013 recap tonight, the Top 3 contestants — Angie Miller, Candice Glover, and Kree Harrison — face off one last time to determine who will make the American Idol finale for Season 12. Who won American Idol tonight when the votes are counted tomorrow will very likely be the same finalist who wins American Idol 2013 next week. Which contestant will earn your votes based on their performances on American Idol tonight? Join us for our live American Idol recap and watch the action with us!

Tonight on American Idol 2013, the Top 3 ladies will be forced to perform one song chosen for them by Jimmy Iovine, one from the American Idol judges, and a third Idol's Choice song (although The Idol Pad claims this has been replaced with a Producer's Choice song). With the race about as close as it can get between the Top 3, who will come out ahead in the American Idol voting tonight is still anyone’s guess. Song choices could make or break the finalists tonight, and we are hoping the Top 3 really did get to choose one of them tonight so we get the chance to see what they would have chosen for themselves at this crucial time.

The newest American Idol winner will be announced next week, and no matter which of the Top 3 it is, we think all of them are deserving of the title. Candice Glover, Angie Miller and Kree Harrison are all spectacular talents, and while we are giving a slight edge to Angie at this point, we’d be happy no matter who won American Idol Season 12. Although some Idol fan sites are basically declaring Angie Miller can’t be beaten, we’re honestly not so sure.

Of course, that’s all in the future. Now it’s time to tune into the present and watch the awesome American Idol performances tonight from the Top 3 contestants. So get comfy, grab a snack, and get ready to enjoy all the highs and lows of our live American Idol recap starting right now!

The American Idol Top 3 have just returned from their hometown visits and Ryan Seacrest is surrounded by their friends and family as the show opens. We’ll no doubt be seeing a lot of footage of the visits tonight, but for more in depth coverage, you can check out our in depth for each of the hometown visits by Angie Miller, Candice Glover, and Kree Harrison.

The American Idol judges are introduced... and all we can think is, what on Earth is Mariah Carey wearing? Seriously, she looks like she just came from a tennis match, for ten-year-olds, on the beach. Well, we guess she can at least actually give a real standing ovation if she wants to in that outfit without some fancy tight gown skirt getting in her way.

Kree Harrison: American Idol Top 3 Performance — “Perfect” by P!nk

Judges: Keith Urban says this song choice only proves one thing to him, that Kree is just a country girl. No matter what she sings, she just has her own signature sound. It kind of sounds like an insult, like she should stick to only singing country. Nicki Minaj says her Kreedom’s voice just always sounds warm and “quality.” She thinks Kree was more comfortable this week than last time. She thinks Kree should wear some flat cowboy boots so she can move around the stage more. Randy Jackson says “Yo” and he didn’t really love the song for her, but she can sing anything at any time. But the song just didn’t have the pizazz for him and it was a little flat. Mariah Carey says she felt like it was an interesting song choice by Jimmy and it must be difficult to sing something other people picked for her. Then she gives a sidebar about how when she started out she wouldn’t sing other people’s songs because, well, she was just better than that. She thinks Kree was a bit restrained but hopes she’ll be coming out more later on in the night.

What She Said: Kree says she doesn’t want anyone to be confused that she is a country singer and she would never have chosen that song, but she does love P!nk so it was fun.

Our Rating: 8 out of 10

American Idol Voting Numbers For Kree:

1 (866) IDOLS 01, 1(866) IDOLS 04 and 1 (866) IDOLS 07

Candice Glover: American Idol Top 3 Performance — “One” by U2 & Mary J. Blige

Judges: Nicki Minaj says congrats for making the Top 3 on her third time around on American Idol. She thinks Jimmy Iovine picked a great song for Candice and she totally did the song justice. “That did not feel like it was American Idol, that felt like I was at your show. Work it!” Randy Jackson says he thinks the third time is going to be the charm for her. He doesn’t know everything is perfect, but the emotion was there and Candice is “in it to win it” and “wants to win this thing.” Mariah Carey says she can’t believe Candice worked as a travel agent, as anything but a singer. “Really? She was booking tickets? I’m so confused!” Mariah says they really felt it and Candice will realize her dreams. Keith Urban says it was a great song choice by Jimmy and he loves how much power Candice has. He loved it.

What She Said: Candice had not heard any version of this song ever before she had to perform it. She went through the lyrics and tried to get to the emotion behind the song and go from there.

Our Rating: 8.5 (she has set her own standard very high...)

American Idol Voting Numbers For Candice:

1 (866) IDOLS 02, 1(866) IDOLS 05 and 1(866) IDOLS 08

Angie Miller: American Idol Top 3 Performance — “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word” by Elton John

Judges: Randy Jackson wants to know if Angie felt weird not being at the piano for this song. She says Jimmy might have wanted her to, but she just didn’t think she could learn the song well enough in such a short amount time to do it justice. He thinks the performance was great and he loved her on the verses especially. Mariah Carey thinks Angie had one of her best performances on the show. Keith Urban thinks Angie went a little overboard, but her voice is so fabulous and he loved it. Nicki Minaj says it was a stellar vocal but it didn’t really hit her emotionally the way she would have liked. Even so, she says Angie is still amazing and obviously out to win.

What She Said: Angie says she will be getting back behind the piano tonight later on. She doesn’t really get a chance to say anything else.

Our Rating: 8.5 (it’s neck and neck with Candice...)

American Idol Voting Numbers For Angie:

1 (866) IDOLS 03, 1(866) IDOLS 06 and 1(866) IDOLS 09

Jimmy Iovine says round one goes to Angie and we kind of agree. Candice was just a little off her game on that first song. Now it’s time for the American Idol judges’ choices for the Top 3 this evening, with video montages from each of their hometown visits before their performances.

Candice Glover: American Idol Top 3 Performance — “Next To Me” by Emile Sandé

Judges: Mariah Carey says she felt like Candice brought her home with her. She thinks going home made Candice energized again. She can only see very, very good things happening for her in the future. Keith Urban says he was totally in the song, he was into it and the beginning was so perfect. He says it was so good and what she did with the song was just beautiful. Nicki Minaj says watching Candice’s hometown video was just so emotional and it was hard for her to watch. Nicki gets choked up trying to do her critique and finally just has to say it was amazing and move on. Randy says “we all got lifted with you.. and this is one of the greatest things about American Idol.” Then he actually says “kudos to us.” He also says it was just fabulous. Nicki comes back on to say she wants to congratulate Candice for being “the most confident woman on that stage” and inspiring woman of all colors no matter what they look like or where they’ve come from.

What She Said: “I used to be the most insecure person ever and this show has helped me so much... I can’t talk.”

Our Rating: 9

Angie Miller American Idol Top 3 Performance — “Try” by Pink

Judges: Keith Urban is happy Angie did not go behind the piano for this one and thinks Angie looked more comfortable than she has before without it. He tells her “Boston Strong,” in tribute to the recent Boston Marathon bombings. Nicki Minaj wants to know what changed for Angie on this song. Angie says watching the hometown visits really got to her. Nicki says she should watch them every day then! She also says that she realized when she ran into Miley Cyrus at the MET Ball Gala this past weekend that Angie is Miley’s long-lost twin. (We think so too, which is why we picked Miley as Angie’s celebrity look-alike.) Randy Jackson says she did a great job. Mariah Carey thinks Angie has really find her true home on the stage.

What She Said: Not really anything much.

Our Rating: 8.5

Kree Harrison: American Idol Top 3 Performance — “Here Comes Goodbye” by Chris Sligh/Rascal Flatts

Judges: Nicki Minaj says you cannot underestimate or deny the power of a true emotional trigger. “When you went back home, you were able to regain that feeling.” She talks about how strong you have to be to be this young and have no parents. Nicki says she proposed to Kree in Vegas, and then Kree divorced her for some boy she thinks, but she just wants to give her love. She says her parents are proud of her and kissing her and hugging her right now. Randy Jackson says words can’t even express. He says the judges just love all of the finalists and they are one of the best Top 3 contestants ever. “That was unbelievably beautiful... that was brilliant.” Mariah Carey absolutely agrees and says there is just something about Kree. “No matters what happens from here, you will always, always have this... I’m overwhelmed with emotion, I’m in awe of the pureness of your emotion when you sing.” Keith Urban says it was the perfect song for her, she sang it just right, and she felt it just right. “God bless you.”

What She Said: Poor Kree is just trying not to burst into tears on stage. She just mumbles out a thank you with a forced smile. She’s gotta be just overwhelmed right now.

Our Rating: 9 (best of the night so far)

Jimmy Iovine weighs and says that even though it is hard to sing through the emotion of a song like Kree did, he thinks she won the second round. Now we're on to the Producer's Choice songs and this should be a very interesting set...

Angie Miller American Idol Top 3 Performance — “Maybe” by Emile Sand

Judges: Randy Jackson loves this performance too. He’s just pleased with everyone tonight. He thinks Angie has really become a complete artist tonight. Mariah Carey says she has nothing negative she wants to say about this performance. She thinks Angie did a great job with a difficult song. Keith Urban says Angie should try singing a song under the piano next time, because it doesn’t matter at all. He thinks it was great. Nicki Minaj thinks Angie has really come full circle and grown so much as an artist.

What She Said: Angie says she has given it all and hopes it will pay off in the votes. She’s shamelessly self-promoting.

Our Rating: 8.5 (we’re on a sliding scale now because of Kree...)

Kree Harrison American Idol Top 3 Performance — “Better Dig Two” by The Band Perry

Judges: Mariah Carey says “we see the wild side of Kree this evening!” However, Mariah says she likes the raw emotion of her other performance. She says she likes the “sorrow” more than the “anger.” Keith Urban says he doesn’t know if that was the right song choice for her. Nicki Minaj says whoever picked this song for Kree should be “stoned” and she didn’t like it at all. She thinks Kree was not in her comfort zone. Nicki says whenever Kree leaves this show, she’ll be buying her album. Randy Jackson says Kree is definitely on her way, but this song was just too ordinary for her and he didn’t like it.

What She Said: Kree says she is feeling really thankful to just be up there singing for everyone. It’s been a dream come true.

Our Rating: 8 (our inner Southern girl actually kind of liked it...)

Candice Glover American Idol Top 3 Performance — “Somewhere” by Reri Grist/Barbra Streisand

Judges: It’s a standing ovation for Candice! Honestly though, this is one of those songs that if you have the pipes, it is hard NOT to be amazing because the song itself is just crazy awesome. It has those huge, high, ringing notes that just blow people away. Keith Urban says get out there and vote for Candice or basically you must be dead. “Four words,” Nicki Minaj says. “See ya next week.” Randy Jackson says “she had one of the best vocals in American Idol history, and now she has another one!” Mariah Carey says she is so proud of Candice and “thanks again for making me cry yet again.”

What She Said: She doesn’t really get the chance to say anything more than thank you.

Our Rating: 9

For round three, Jimmy Iovine says Candice took the third round because anyone who could add their own soul to a huge song like “Somewhere” is amazing. He says she doesn’t just win the round, she wins the night. Maybe those folks out thinking Angie Miller has this season in the bag might want to reconsider...

That's a wrap for our live American Idol recap tonight. Join us for the American Idol results show tomorrow and find out who will be going on to the American Idol finale!
