When producer Kevin "Shakespeare" Briggs first played the track for Kandi, she dug it, but thought she could write better lyrics to it. Although the producer was skeptical, he let her have a go at it. Later, cruising in her car, Kandi started freestyling the famous opening verse:
A scrub is a guy who thinks he's fly And is also known as a buster Always talkin' about what he wants And just sits on his broke ass.
Although, the first time she sang it, the last lyric was "And just sits on his fat ass."
When LA Reid heard the song, he let Kandi know that girl group TLC was interested, and Kandi was all for it. "I wanted to write for other artists, but I really didn't know how to go about writing for other people," she remembered.
Little did she know that the song would end up becoming the Top Airplay Song of 1999. Even this year, The New Directions took on the ‘90s anthem in an episode of Glee!
"I was extremely surprised at how huge "No Scrubs" became," Kandi revealed.
