On the Once Upon a TimeSeason 2 finale (Season 2, Episode 22: "And Straight On 'Til Morning"), we finally found out what Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) and Bae's (Michael Raymond-James) backstory is. So, were they friends? Enemies? Here's the deal."
After rescuing Bae from the sea, Hook originally planned to turn Bae over to the evil Peter Pan shadow. However, after he realized Bae was Rumple's son, he protected the boy, bringing him under his wing. From Bae's POV Hook seemed like a good guy. But Hook had an ulterior motive: to find out more about Rumple and how to destroy him.
That said, Hook clearly became attached to Bae (he's Milah's son too, after all), keeping him on board even after he learned how to kill Rumple. However, after Bae learned the full truth — that Hook was responsible for tearing his family apart — he wanted nothing to do with Hook. When Hook couldn't win Bae over, he betrayed him, and turned him over to Peter Pan's Lost Boys.
All of this emotional backstory played into the present storyline: At first Hook made off with the one remaining bean, but he eventually decided to come back to help, and even claimed to be done trying to kill Rumple — and we feel like thinking about Bae must have played into that.
