Nina Dobrev Calls Angelina Jolie’s Double Mastectomy “Difficult Decision”

Many people were moved by the New York Times essay written by Angelina Jolie about her double mastectomy yesterday. It explained why she underwent the procedure, and since then the actress has received an outpouring of support from Hollywood and beyond.

The Vampire Diaries Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert) is among the celebrities commending Angelina for her brave revelation. She tweeted a link to the article and wrote, “This absolutely blew my mind. Angelina Jolie speaking out about a difficult decision that will inform + empower others.”

The medical procedure Angelina underwent will decrease her chance of getting breast cancer. She opted to have the surgery after learning she carries the BRCA1 gene, which predisposed her to breast and ovarian cancer. According to her doctors, the mother of six had an 87% chance of developing breast cancer before the surgery.

“But I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience,” Angelina wrote in the NYT essay. “Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.”

Hopefully Angelina’s candor will help others through a difficult diagnosis.
