Once Upon a Time in Wonderland Casting: Which Character Will Pee-Wee Play?
UPDATE: John Lithgow has replaced Paul Reubens as the voice of The White Rabbit. When the spin-off was picked up by ABC, the role was recast, so Pee-Wee will no longer have Wonderland as his playhouse.
ORIGINAL STORY: Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, the proposed Once Upon a Time spin-off, is moving right along. Deadline announced the casting of Wonderland’s White Rabbit, and it is a bit of a surprise. The signature character will be voiced by none other than Paul Reubens, best known for his alter-ego, Pee-Wee Herman.
Paul has quite a distinctive voice that is so associated with his Pee-Wee Herman character. It will be strange to hear it as the White Rabbit. We wonder if the White Rabbit character will be as quirky as Pee-Wee, and how big of a part he will play in the spin-off.
Deadline also reported that the director for the presentation that will determine whether the project goes onto series will be Ralph Hemecker. Ralph has directed two episodes of OUAT: Season 1, Episode 10: “7:15 a.m.” and Season 1, Episode 17: “Hat Trick.” The latter focused on the backstory of Wonderland character The Mad Hatter (Sebastian Stan), who will also presumably be in the spin-off.
Reubens joins other Wonderland cast members Sophie Lowe (Alice), Emma Rigby (the Red Queen), Peter Gadiot (Cyrus), and Michael Socha (Knave of Hearts). It’s as of yet unclear if Barbara Hershey will be making any appearances as Cora/The Queen of Hearts.
