Callie and Arizona's relationship has survived so much — a trip to Africa, a surprise baby, a car crash, a plane crash, etc. — that we thought they were indestructible. Even Arizona's cheating, while heartbreaking, seemed like something that they could work through. But then came the fight at the end of the finale.
Suddenly, we realized we weren't looking at a strong marriage that had to work past a momentarily infidelity. While the audience (and Callie) thought the wounds from the plane crash had mostly healed, this fight dispelled that notion. Arizona is still hanging on to an incredible amount of pain and anger over the crash and the loss of her leg. And it came out in the kind of torrential rant that's hard to recover from. Can either fully forgive the other at this point?
With a lot of effort, we do think this relationship could be fixed. It's not as though Callie and Arizona have a fundamental incompatibility a la Owen and Cristina. The real problem is that they rushed too quickly to get everything back to "normal." Arizona never had a chance to really work through her feelings about everything that happened to her, and Calzona as a couple never figured out how to function in a post-plane crash world.
If they were willing to go to therapy, both separately and together, and take things slowly, really slowly, we do think that Calzona has a shot. But it would be a long, hard, painful struggle, and chances are things would never be truly the same. Is it worth it? (On the other hand, isn't that what "'Til death do us part" means?)
Should Callie and Arizona try to make things work, or will it be too little, too late? Vote in our reaction buttons, and sound off in the comments below!
