The Voice’s Cassadee Pope on Performing During National Tragedies, Her New Charity — Exclusive

When tornadoes touched down in Oklahoma on May 20, the cast of The Voice had the tough task of going live only a few short hours later. Naturally, the situation was handled tastefully as host Carson Daly asked coach Blake Shelton and duo The Swon Brothers about their respective families who reside in the ravaged state. At this point we expect nothing less.

The Voice has gone on-air during some of our nation’s biggest natural disasters and most horrific tragedies. In Season 3 the cast took to the stage to sing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” as each individual contestant and coach held the name and age of a victim in the Sandy Hook shooting.

Season 3 winner Cassadee Pope remembers the moment well. Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the singer and she reflected on the experience.

“I had a 6-year-old girl, and it was really hard to get through that performance,” she admits. “I just kept thinking about what my job at that moment was and that was to just make people feel like it was going to be OK and know that we’re all going to be there for them. And if I was up there crying my eyes out, which I did at rehearsal and I got it all out thankfully, but if I was on TV and that parent saw me sobbing, I wouldn’t be doing my job as an artist and as a singer who’s trying to bring comfort. It’s my job to stay strong and make them feel like it’s going to be alright.”

Tonight her former coach, Blake Shelton, and his wife, Miranda Lambert, will take to The Voice stage to sing a special tribute to the victims of the Oklahoma tornadoes. And Cassadee continues to look for ways to help, even off stage.

Working through Republic Nashville Records, Cassadee has dedicated some of her time to the outreach program, Outnumber Hunger (

“Obviously with everything that’s going on in Oklahoma, they really help people out right now,” she said. “Hunger is happening there right now. It’s an easy thing to get involved with. I wanted to be involved with it because it’s such a huge problem and it doesn’t get a lot of light. There’s a lot of horrible things happening in the world, but in our own country, so many people are going hungry. In my profession, I get to sing, I get to do whatever I want as an artist and it’s fun, but if I do have a platform, I want to use it for sure.”

And she’s definitely putting her platform to good use as she prepares to tour with Rascal Flatts this summer before releasing her album in the fall.
