Zendaya Coleman andVal Chmerkovskiy didn’t do anything wrong. They were a fantastic team. They put on amazing performances. They topped the judges’s leaderboard on the Finale. But it was always going to come down to Kellie and Derek vs. Zendaya and Val and it just turned out that more DWTS fans decided to back Kellie and her now four-time champion pro partner.
To some DWTS viewers, Zendaya’s previous dance experience — Hip Hop and appearing on the dance-related show Shake It Up — were big marks against her in terms of voting for her to win. She didn’t have ballroom experience, but some felt she was too good, too early in the season for a real “journey.” (As opposed to Kellie being famous as a country singer from American Idol, with no dance experience beyond cheerleading.)
Others thought that, at age 16, Zendaya was too young to be there. She has all those millions of Twitter followers, and we thought they would be able to help her win last night, but it’s possible the voting issues hurt her. And some people — entirely unfairly, in our opinions, but we’ve seen it — called out Zendaya’s attitude as too confident. It’s OK to not be gosh-golly self-deprecating all the time! Good for her for showing confidence out there.
Anyway, after Zendaya was named runner-up, Brooke Burke-Charvet asked if she was proud of what she'd achieved. "I am,” Zendaya said. “I'm very proud, I'm very happy and I get to leave here with an amazing experience, so I'm happy." She and Val should be proud of their achievements. Val placed third last season and second this time, so that’s a good sign for him to move a step forward on Season 17 — and we hope Zendaya is in the audience cheering him on.
