Season 7 Bachelorette Ashley Hebert and husband J.P. Rosenbaum waited nearly two years after their engagement to get married, and it turns out the former reality star is taking her sweet time with another big step, too: No, not having kids (though we have more on that later). We’re talking about girlfriend’s so-far refusal to take JP’s last name! In fact, Ashley tells Wetpaint exclusively that she may never legally change it.
We caught up with the couple at Brancott Estate Wines’ summer kickoff party at Catch in NYC, where both Ashley and JP gave us their thoughts on the complicated matter of swapping surnames.
Wetpaint: Do things feel different now that you’re officially man and wife and not just engaged and living together? Ashley: I would say no, we’re exactly the same. JP: There’s no switch, no sense of ‘What do we do now?’ Getting married was an unbelievable milestone and right now we’re just looking forward to the next one. She’s my partner in life and things are great.
Ashley, have you changed your name yet? Ashley: No! I haven’t done it yet. I’m actually not sure if I’m going to. JP: What!? No I’m kidding. It doesn’t matter. If she wants to, great, if not, that’s okay, too. Ashley: It’s funny because I always thought I wanted to change my last name. I used to hate it. But now I’m like, well, it’s an important part of me. But our kids will definitely be Rosenbaums. I think hyphenating the last names is just too complicated.
Speaking of kids, are you making baby plans? JP: After her residency, which is another year away. Ashley: Or before… JP (smiling): AFTER.
