How to Fly Into Outer Space With Leonardo DiCaprio — Seriously (UPDATE)
UPDATE: According to The Hollywood Reporter, the winning bid was 1.2 million euros, or about $1.5 million U.S. A second pair of seats on the same flight sold to another bidder for 1.8 million euros ($2.3 million U.S.). Look at those rich people go!
Who doesn't want an out-of-this-world adventure with Jack Dawson?
According to Page Six, one of the auction prizes at tonight's amfAR gala at the Cannes Film Festival is a trip on Virgin Atlantic's space flight, along with Leonardo DiCaprio. In fact, the highest bidder will be personally escorted by Leo.
Tickets for the “world’s first commercial space flight” normally cost $200,000, and Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson said he hopes to launch the first manned flight around Christmas this year. The trip is said to only last about 2.5 hours, carrying six passengers and two pilots about 360,000 feet above the Earth. Still, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime.
At this point, 65,000 people have reportedly put their names on a waiting list for future trips, and famous names raring to go include Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Ashton Kutcher, and Stephen Hawking. Apparently Leo is going up too, along with the highest bidder tonight. They should hold a lottery for this kind of thing, instead of letting the richest person have the most fun. Or have a poker game and leave the tickets as the prize, just like Jack in Titanic. Not that that trip turned out well for him...
