’80s TV and Movie Star Steve Forrest Dies

Steve Forrest — best known as Lt. Hondo Harrelson on S.W.A.T., but also for roles in Spies Like Us, Mommie Dearest, Dallas, and Murder, She Wrote — died May 18 in Thousand Oaks, CA. He was 87. His family said he died peacefully but no cause of death was disclosed.

According to Reuters, he fought in the U.S. Army at the Battle of the Bulge in World War II and got his big break when Gregory Peck saw him in a theater production in 1950, leading to a contract with film studio MGM. Forrest's IMDb page shows steady TV and film work for more than 50 years — from 1950 to 2003, when he appeared in the S.W.A.T. film based on his original TV show.

Forrest, born William Forrest Andrews, was the youngest of 13 children. His older brother, Dana Andrews, starred in the 1940s classics Laura and The Best Years of Our Lives. Forrest is survived by his wife, Christine, three sons, and four grandchildren.
