Usher Dresses His Kids in Ethnic Costumes: Educational or Offensive? (PHOTO)

R&B star and The Voice judge Usher introduces his kids to different foods and cultures by playing dress-up, but is this seemingly creative approach too much?

Usher and his two boys, 4-year-old Naviyd Ely and 5-year-old Usher Raymond V, are featured in this stitched image wearing ponchos and fake moustaches, their heads nearly swallowed whole by oversized sombreros, celebrating the family’s weekly “Mexican Monday” dinner.

“Me and my compadre's at it again...#MexicanMondays,” reads the caption. An earlier photo showed their first experiment with the cultured dining experience, and a third image shortly followed to introduce “Thai Tuesdays.” That night featured conical hats, chopsticks, and a Buddha statue.

Usher explained his family’s dinner time tradition to Jay Leno, saying, “I think everybody has some little thing that they do in their family, this is just something I felt would be helpful for them to understand and be mindful of the world around them. As I travel and I take them different places I’d like for them to understand the places that they’re going, the languages that are there, as well as the food and the culture.

“So, therefore, I have Mexican Mondays, Thai Tuesdays, West Indies Wednesdays, Tuscan Thursdays, and French Fridays… It’s really fun on Saturday. (We have) Wild Out Saturdays, where you (can) do anything, you can fart at the table, eat with your hands…”

We love that Usher is hands-on about teaching his kids about other cultures. But while many families have Taco Tuesdays at their house, they usually don’t include ethnic costumes like this. How do you feel about the Raymond family’s involved approach to multiculturalism: educational or offensive?
