Memorial Weekend 2013 Is Best Ever For Box Office: Report
Did you go see a movie over the weekend? Everyone else did!
According to Deadline, this has been the biggest Memorial Day weekend and the biggest four-day holiday of all time. We're looking at $317 million in total, beating 2011's previous Memorial Weekend record of $276.7 million.
What are we all watching? Sequels! Sorry, originality. This is not your year.
Number one, by a lot, is Universal's Fast & Furious 6, which earned $38.7M on Friday, $31.5M on Saturday, and $26.6M on Sunday for a 3-day weekend total of $96.8M, and a 4-day holiday total of roughly $120M. Worldwide, it's already taken in $317M. This is Universal's highest domestic and international opening weekend of all time.
In second place is The Hangover III, which opened to about $51.2 million in the four-day holiday weekend. Third is Star Trek Into Darkness with about $47M for the four days. Next were Epic and Iron Man 3, followed by The Great Gatsby.
With Fast & Furious doing so well even after six (six!) films, we can probably expect several more movies like that in future summers. Yay?
