Grey’s Anatomy is known for lots of things, including lots of drama, sharp dialogue, and plot twists, but at the end of the day, we love it for its inventive, crazy cases.
Yes, the relationships between the doctors — whether romantic or platonic — are fantastic, and we have loved watching everyone grow up over the past nine years, but given that this is a medical drama, we enjoy the creativeness of the show. Remember the manuscript-poisoned man, the “lion face,” and a guy who swallowed a bunch of doll heads? Those were just a few ridiculous ones from Season 2!
In the seasons following, we saw a guy try to use a chainsaw on himself, a woman with toxic blood who nearly caused the surgeons to pass out, a couple get stuck together during sex, and a mysterious Jane Doe (who Karev fell in love with). We could go on and on, but the point we’re trying to make is that cases like this don’t happen much anymore, especially during Season 9.
While there were a few interesting cases throughout the season, most of the focus was on not losing the hospital, relationships, and the overall aftermath of the plane crash. Instead of watching the doctors get perplexed about solving a case and saving someone’s life in a new and inventive way, they were dodging security cameras and trying to raise money to buy the hospital. We understand it was a main plot line, but it wasn’t the most exciting.
We’d love to see Grey’s go back to the days where our eyes are glued to the screen as Derek tries to remove nails from a patient’s head or they try to remove a 70-pound tumor. Even in the episode where Sarah Chalke guest-starred as a frantic mother trying to figure out what was wrong with her son, the drama and thrills weren’t there — we wanted him to get better, but visually, it was just a little boy asleep in bed.
What do you think? Did you miss the inventive, crazy cases in Season 9? (Or in general, for that matter.) Sound off below!
